Philosophy and Genre:
Creating a Textual Basis
for African Philosophy
What if philosophy began not with ideas, but with stories, songs, and poems?
The Philosophy and Genre project, led by Prof. Alena Rettová, dares to rethink philosophy through the power of language and form. From novels and Sufi poetry to blogs and essays, it explores how genre itself shapes the way we think, question, and understand the world. Working across eight African and European languages, the project bridges literature and philosophy—revealing how new philosophical insights emerge from the textures of everyday expression, oral traditions, and creative writing. Here, philosophy speaks in many voices—and every genre tells its own truth.
